Portrait Workshop with Clayton Beck III

Woodlands Art League Gallery at Market Street
presents Clayton Beck III

After graduation from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Clayton studied at the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts with Richard Schmid. Clayton’s career began while still at the American Academy, exhibiting at Jody Kirberger’s Talisman Gallery and winning awards from the Midwest Pastel Society, the Palette and Chisel and the Pastel Society of America. He began teaching Saturday classes in Chicago after graduation from art school.

Artist Statement: "My love for painting has always been enhanced by my love to teach. Any artist who thinks they understand painting should try teaching. They will soon realize how little they know. I have always felt that I have a responsibility to teach because I have been given a generous gift from my teachers (i.e. Bill Parks, Ted Smuskiewicz, and Richard Schmid) and it should be passed on to the next generation of painters who share this love of art."

Recently, Clayton has been featured in International Artist Magazine, and in last fall's American Artist Workshop Magazine.

Workshop offerings:
Week 1: Portrait Painting Nov 8-12 9am-4pm $450
Week 2: Portrait Painting/looking at masters such as Sargent, Fechin, Mancini... Nov 15-19 9am-4pm $450
To register contact Kim Abbati (kabbati@aol.com)
Nonrefundable deposit of $200 required.

WAL Opens Market Street Art Gallery!

Warm greetings WAL Members,

It is with great pleasure and excitement that the WAL board of directors is pleased to announce that TM MARKET STREET LLC has granted Woodlands Art League a temporary license space for the right to show art and to offer art classes. Members, we have a gallery!

The temporary license runs from August 1st, to December 31st, with first right of renewal. Rent for the space is $500 plus electricity and is located at 9595 Six Pines #1370, across from Aaron Brothers Art. The space is about 2,800 square ft., with a large back room that we will be using for studio classes, workshops and group gatherings to expand our artistic interests. The space is well suited for our needs and is in very good condition except for the lack of a good cleaning (currently underway) and possible repainting. We have been able to obtain some free fixtures and materials to build three model platforms. We also have plenty of room to house a children's program, library, gathering area, and exhibition.

We are not letting go of our other venues with the Community Center or the Library as it is important that we stay connected to these venues for our many community activities. In fact many venues to show art in our community have opened up for us to act on in the coming months.

This new space helps to advance our mission statement which is: “The League’s purpose is to further the cause and interest in the visual arts through scholarships, teaching, programs, demonstrations, exhibitions, and community involvement." Our league was founded exclusively for educational purposes and is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We are WAL, a unique group of artists and supporters of the arts. Let’s all come together in the next few months, make this opportunity a huge success, and show The Woodlands and surrounding communities the wealth of talent available for them.

Further information concerning classes, workshops, events, and collection of art work for the Gallery will be announced through our web site very soon.
Thank you, to all the board members and members who have worked so hard to make this Gallery come together in less than a month.

Sincerely,
Vida Tuminas, President
Woodlands Art League

MFAH wants your old brushes!

Leila Christoffel's husband, Joe is a docent at MFAH, and he is involved in creating "Discovery Carts" that lay out materials for visitors to see "up close" what artists use in their work. They have solicited clay, stained glass, metals, and of course, brushes. Joe's assignment is brushes only.

Press coverage for LSAG and Anne Walker

Woodlands oil painter dominates convention

Dalhart Windberg gets a closer look at a sculpture as judge Keiko Yasuoka looks on during the judging portion of Saturday's Lone Star Art Guild show at the Lone Star Convention Center in Conroe.

By Matt Stephens
Updated: 05.15.10
Anne Walker believes her talent as an oil painter was a gift from God. She marks all of her paintings with a cross and writes “To God be to glory” on the back of each one.

“He put this crazy love in my heart, and it’s what I want to do,” Walker said.

The 54-year-old resident of The Woodlands was awarded “Best of Show,” “Mayor’s Choice,” first and second place oil painting and an honorable mention for four of her works presented Saturday at the Lone Star Art Guild’s 49th Annual Convention at the Lone Star Convention Center in Conroe.

“I’m very overwhelmed,” she said. “There’s so much beautiful work here.”

The LSAG is an organization of 21 art leagues and approximately 2,000 member artists within a 200-mile radius of Houston. The event presented 730 pieces of artwork from 376 Southeast Texas artists in categories of various painting mediums, three-dimensional mediums, drawing and photography.

“We are always excited to see our artists enjoying the process of showing and selling their artwork at our annual convention,” said Theresa Thornhill, second vice president of the guild. “This show represents the best of the best from our member leagues.”

Thornhill said there were no specific criteria for the three judges who awarded artwork, but they had to agree on “Best of Show” and some of the other awards.

“They talked back and forth and argued, but eventually they all agreed,” she said.

Two of the three judges for the event, artists Larry Dyke and Keiko Yasuoka, said Walker’s work was so successful at the convention because of how technically sound it was. Yasuoka, an accomplished painter and calligraphy artist from Japan, said Walker’s work also manages to tell a story despite its simple components.

“When you can see a painting that tells a story, that’s the most important thing,” Yasuoka said “If you can see a story in a still life, then it’s very successful.”

Walker’s still life of a bowl of fruit titled “Classical Fruit” won the overall “Best of Show.”

Dyke, a well-known landscape painter, said that even though judging art is completely subjective, he praised Walker’s technique as being “above reproach.”

Three more of her works won awards, including a painting of her golden retriever, which received a second-place ribbon, and a portrait of her 23-year-old daughter Sarah, which received a first-place ribbon, as well as the “Mayor’s Choice” award.

“My daughter is so incredibly gorgeous on the outside, but also gorgeous on the inside,” Walker said. “She’s got the prettiest heart you’ve ever seen.”

Although she has only been painting for 12 years, a number that surprised many fellow artists who complimented her work, Walker has been interested in art for much longer. A Conroe High School graduate in 1973, she attended The University of Texas, where she studied art history and excelled at drawing.

Walker said she doesn’t have a great story about her sudden desire to start painting in 1998. She just knew she wanted to try.

“I just wanted to paint,” Walker said. “I went to my local art store and asked, ‘What do I need to paint?”

It didn’t take long for her to get noticed. In 1999, her work was published in an art magazine and noticed by Sen. Hillary Clinton. Walker was named one of America’s top 200 craftsmen and a folk painting she made of the White House was placed in the Blue Room.

“It’s probably still sitting around in the basement there somewhere,” Walker said.

Jeanne Matthews needs our support

A lot of you know Jeanne Matthews. She has been a member of several art leagues including Tomball Art League, Woodlands Art League, and the Conroe Art League. Whenever she joins a league, she also volunteers her time and helps out a lot which we all know is a precious commodity for any organization.

We have some sad news. On Apr 21st, Jeanne’s husband went to be with the Lord. I'm sure you'll all agree that this is a very hard time for Jeanne. This past year has been very difficult for her because of her husband’s health as well as her own, which has caused her to be in the hospital at various times. Please take a moment and send Jeanne a card to let her know her “art” family is there if she needs us.

Jeanne's address is:
546 Sandy Lane, Conroe, TX 77302

Volunteers needed for LSAG May 14-15, in Conroe, TX

CENTER PIECES:
North West Art League will be doing the center pieces for the LSAG Convention on March 31 (a Wednesday) at the Norchester Community Center on Jones Road. We will begin work at 10:00am. Paint and sponge brushes will be provided, but please bring your favorite brushes for detail work and, if you use acrylics, bring your favorite colors. We will break for lunch, so bring a sack lunch or plan to go to the near-by Subway. E-mail Claire Payne at cpaynting@comcast.net if you have questions and to let her know you are coming.

REGISTRATION:
We need volunteers for registration on Friday and Saturday of the Convention. Please let Nancy Lee, nancydlee@earthlink.net know if you are able to help with that job.

SET UP/TEAR DOWN:
Many hands make little work. We will need many hands for setting up and taking down the flats. We will try to get some paid help to unload the flats, but help is always needed from many volunteers to make each task easier for the next person. If you are willing to help, please let Claire Payne at cpaynting@comcast.net, know...the more the merrier!

The Woodlands Art League's LSAG rep is Theresa G. Thornhill. If you have any questions or need further clarification about these or other jobs, do not hesitate to email her at tgthornhill@sbcglobal.net or call: 713.816.0699.

LSAG Cover Art Contest

Lone Star Art Guild
Yearbook Cover Contest

( As a member of the Woodlands Art League, your entry is due by Thursday, March 25. Bring your entry to the meeting so we can vote on which piece will represent our league. )

Each year at the Lone Star Art Guild convention the members of the LSAG vote on artwork that will be used on the front and back covers of the yearbook. The entries for this contest are submitted by its member leagues. Each league may submit two entries, either a front and back cover entry, or two front cover entries, or two back cover entries. These entries usually are determined by the voting within each member league on entries submitted by their members.

We will hold this competition again this year. Each league may submit two entries. Each entry should be black and white and "copy ready". The entry size is 8" H x5"W. For front cover entries, try to have "Lone Star Art Guild" and "2010 -2011" somewhere in the design. The design itself must be an artwork drawn by the artist and not “computer aided”. The exception to this is the lettering which may be done using a computer. Two Xerox
copies should accompany the artwork to demonstrate how “camera ready” the artwork is. If the artist wishes the original artwork returned, please enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope. Try not to include all the member league names on the cover as this may change from year to year.

The league presidents will send the winning entries for their leagues to the LSAG 3rd Vice- President: Marguerite Bundick, 2009 Merlin Street, Bay City, TX 77414. Marguerite says she will accept entries up until April 21.

LSAG's meeting time is set

The time for LSAG's Spring meeting is set for 11am on Saturday, March 13th.

Here are the details again:

“The Tomball Art League welcomes you to Tomball on March 13, 2010. We will meet at the Amegy Bank (2nd Floor), 28201 Hwy 249, NW corner of Bus. Hwy 249 and Medical Center Complex. If you come from the south on Hwy 249, be sure to keep to the far right to stay on the Business Route. This is TAL's normal meeting place, Since our show is that day at the Community Center in downtown Tomball, the room is available. It has lots of room, a kitchen, and bathrooms. The room is available from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Please park in the adjacent parking lot, not in front of the bank. Its lobby is open that morning. I will leave to Mary Burkhalter to decide on the meeting time. We invite you to visit our show in the afternoon. When we assemble, I will get a head count for lunch. We have the option to order sandwich platters from the Quizno's in the same center or going out to lunch. There is a tea room downtown and a good restaurant further north on 249 that could probably accommodate us with a table.

Okay, everyone, the spring LSAG meeting is being held at the Tomball Art League Spring show on March 13. If you are interested in attending , please contact your league president. Your league president will get a head count and pass that on to Connie Bosworth. You may enter their show in the morning and attend the meeting for lunch or just come for the meeting. Anyone that wants to attend may come but, if anything is voted upon, each league has three votes. The nominating committee will have the slate of officers that have been nominated for next year. Liz Hill Abstract Landscape workshop

Wal member Liz Hill will teach a workshop in watermedia collage.  1 DAY, SAT., March 13

TIME: 9:00-4:00 P.M.

COST: $70

Location: Christ Church, League Line Rd., Conroe After Liz did an abstract landscape demo at CAL's spring show, requests have been made for her to do a workshop so we are pleased to offer one. It was so much fun watching her put her creation together with such apparent abandonment yet with obvious knowledge. She can show us how to have that same fun and creativity. Liz will also bring additional collage papers for use, most of which she has used in her own paintings. This one-day w/s will fill up fast.

Lone Star Art Guild yearbook contest

The deadline for WAL members to submit entries for the Lone Star Art Guild Yearbook (directory) competition is March 25. Applicants are asked to bring their entries (for front and back covers) to the March 25 WAL general meeting, where members will vote on best designs. The winning designs will then be submitted to the LSAG for their April 1 deadline.

Each year the Lone Star Art Guild invites each member league to submit a total of two entries (a front and back cover entry, two front cover entries or two back cover entries) for the competition. Each entry should be black and white and "copy ready". Entry dimensions must be 8" (height) by 5" (width). For front cover entries, try to have "Lone Star Art Guild" and "2010 -2011" somewhere in the design. The design must be an artwork drawn by the artist and not “computer aided,” however, the lettering may be done using a computer. Two Xerox copies should accompany the artwork to demonstrate how “camera ready” the artwork is. If the artist wishes the original artwork returned by LSAG, they must include a stamped self-addressed envelope. Note: try not to include all the member league names on the cover as this may change from year to year.

The winner of the yearbook front cover and the winner of the yearbook back cover will each receive a $50 cash award at the May 14-15 LSAG convention.
